Access to work requires a bachelor's degree in Nautical Science at one of the Merchant Marine schools: Almirante Graça Aranha Instruction Center (Ciaga) in Rio de Janeiro and Almirante Braz de Aguiar Instruction Center (Ciaba), in Belém. The required experience varies from zero to seven years after graduation, according to regulations. The exercise of these occupations, in Brazil, is governed by the Rules of the Maritime Authority for waterway workers (NORMAM-13/2000).
